Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is a very old city in Chatham County, Georgia; it sits on the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Civil War it escaped major damage. It was captured by Union General William T. Sherman in December and presented as a Christmas present to the nation.
Along with neighboring Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Savannah attracts a lot of visitors from the Northeast, Midwest, and even Europe, Canada, South America, and Asia.
Savannah is the setting for Karen Kingsbury's novel The Chance.
Former North Carolina Governor James Grubbs Martin was born in Savannah.
It is the "home base" for the Savannah Bananas, an exhibition barnstorming baseball team (which started as a legitimate minor league club before changing into their current format) similar to the famed Harlem Globetrotters.
