The Samaritan woman at the well was a promiscuous woman, venerated as a saint today, who was the first to whom Jesus revealed his identity as recounted at John 4:4–42 . Jesus's Apostles were shocked that he was even speaking with a Samaritan, which was a violation of the Jewish custom at the time.

The woman is honored as St. Photine by many Christian denominations today.

The encounter has been depicted many times in famous art.
