Roger Staubach
Roger Staubach was a famous football quarterback, first for Navy in college and later for the Dallas Cowboys as a professional. Was a Heisman Trophy winner who didn't play football for years after college after first serving at his Navy requirement in Vietnam. Went on to lead the Cowboys to 4 Super Bowls, winning 2 before retiring in 1979 with the highest quarterback rating ever at that time. (Rule changes would inflate quarterback ratings in the future).
Roger was known for his hard work ethic (after retirement he operated a successful commercial real estate business), but more importantly for his family values. A strong Roman Catholic (he and his wife have six children) who goes to mass daily, he wanted his life on the field to match his life off the field - and it did. His Catholic faith led him to -- while attempting what would be a successful completion to Drew Pearson during the 1975 NFL playoff game between the Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings -- "close his eyes and say a Hail Mary" (the pass is among the most notable plays in NFL history; the term "Hail Mary pass" has entered the English language to describe any last-second pass attempt to tie or win a game, and has extended to other sports as well).
