The Rainbow Coalition was founded by progressive Democrat Jesse Jackson in 1984 to forge a base for his two presidential campaigns. The name was first coined by Jim Jones in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which Jones used to refer to his "Rainbow Family." Jones and his wife adopted three Korean children, a Native American, and were the first white couple in Indiana to adopt an African American child.
