Punta Gorda is a city in Charlotte County in southwestern Florida, nestled on Charlotte Harbor. According to the 2010 census, the city of Punta Gorda was home to 16,641 people,[1] and the greater Punta Gorda area is home to 38,241. Punta Gorda is home to many historic buildings and sites including the old Charlotte County Courthouse, Charlotte High School, the old train depot, the Punta Gorda Women's Club, the old ice factory, numerous churches, and many homes and businesses in the historic district. At one point, Punta Gorda was home to the Punta Gorda Hotel, a fancy resort which had hosted famous people before it burned down. In the early part of the twentieth century, the greater Punta Gorda area was home to a U.S. Army Air Corps. Base, which later became the Punta Gorda Airport, now a civilian airport featuring the annual Florida International Air Show, commercial airline flights via Allegiant Air, and services to private aviators. After World War II, Punta Gorda was mainly known as a fishing town. Many structures in the city were destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004. Punta Gorda is the county seat of Charlotte County, which is home to 159,978.
