Puerto Rico law is a mixture of civil law and common law, and is based primarily on its Civil Code of 1930, as amended. That civil code was extended to Puerto Rico in 1889, and derives from the Spanish Civil Code

The Civil Code governs contracts, torts, property, and marriage rights, while the common law applies to constitutional and federal issues.
