Private Snafu is the titular character in a series of cartoons produced during World War II for the US War Department. The cartoons were designed to teach service personnel about security, hygiene and other military subjects (to keep them alive in many cases) and to build troop morale, generally by showing exactly what NOT to do in most cases.

The character's name comes from a military slang acronym: Situation Normal, All Fouled Up[1]

Several of the cartoons were written by Theodore Geisel (who would become famous as the children's writer Dr. Seuss; Geisel said the cartoons improved his writing) and Private Snafu was voiced by Mel Blanc (who would become famous as the voice of many cartoon characters).

A total of 24 films were produced, though the 24th was never released. The films are now in the public domain and are found widely on the Internet.
