Potters Bar

Potters Bar is a town in the traditional county of Middlesex in south-eastern England. It lies 13 miles north of central London and is one of the few areas of the county with a rural character. It has a population of around 22,500. It is located north-east of the junction between the A1(M) and M25 motorways. Among the best-known landmarks in the town is Wylliott's Manor (or the Old Manor), a former manor house and barn now converted into a pub-restaurant.

For administrative purposes, it is served by Hertsmere Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council.

Name

The town's name was recorded as Pottersbare in 1387. The name most likely refers to the family of Geoffrey le Pottere, who were resident in the South Mimms parish in c. 1300. The word "Bar" most likely refers to the gateway into Enfield Chase.
