Plain Writing Act

Plain Writing Act of 2010 requires that clear communications by federal agencies to the public: "The purpose of this Act is to improve the effectiveness and accountability of Federal agencies to the public by promoting clear Government communication that the public can understand and use."[1]

Elements of plain writing include:

  • Shorter paragraphs and sentences
  • Active rather than passive voice
  • Avoidance of jargon
  • Avoidance of acronyms
  • Use of headers and tables

Some state governments also strive to adhere to these guidelines in light of this federal law.
