Phillip Eric Tarver (born October 29, 1957), is the Republican state representative for District 36 in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, which includes the city of Lake Charles. With 8,298 votes (62 percent), he defeated fellow Republican, Michael Gerard "Mike" Eason (born 1955), a sales executive at the Bank of America in Lake Charles. Eason polled 5,100 votes (38 percent). The turnout of registered voters was only 46.4 percent.[1] Tarver will succeed Moderate Republican Mark Abraham, who was instead elected to the state Senate.
Tarver is a son of Vince Edward Tarver (1923-2016) and the former Eula Blanche "Maw-Maw" Talkington (1931-2016), a native of Arkansas. After a number of years in Natchez, Mississippi, the Tarvers settled in Calcasieu Parish in 1966. He had two brothers, Vincent Wade Tarver (1950-2017) and Timothy Edward Tarver (1965-2016).[2]
Tarver graduated in 1976 from LaGrange High School and in 1981 received a degree in accounting from McNeese State University, both institutions in Lake Charles. After college, he joined a local Certified Public Accounting firm. In 1984, he joined the team at Lake Charles Nissan, of which he became a managing partner in 1991. In 1997, he purchased Lake Charles Toyota. Tarver uses the business slogan, "Where we know you by your name."[3]
He still works at Toyota with his twin sons, Eric and Corey. Mrs. Tarver, the former Dewanna Corley, is the owner of DeWanna’s Community Closet, which helps children who need school uniforms and supplies.[3]
From 2000 to 2006, Tarver was a member of the Calcasieu Parish School Board. From 2007 to 2015, he was a member of the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission. He is a former chairman of the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.[3]
