Peace is a state of tranquility/harmony and the absence of conflict.[1] Peacemaking is also the ability to cope with conflict by peaceful means.[2]

Peace as a fruit of the Holy Spirit

Peace is one of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Fruit of the Holy Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them.[3]

Galatians 5:22: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

In the Bible, a dove is often a symbol of the Holy Spirit.[4]

Peace and Judaism

  • In Hebrew, greetings and peace are both: Shalom.
  • The term Shalom שלום is related to שלם. Meaning wholesome.
  • Psalms 29:11 is the 'seal of the holy Talmud' which ends as follows:
    Rabbi Shimon ben Halafta said: The Blessed Holy One found no vessel which could hold (nation of) Israel’s blessing except shalom [peace], for it is written (Psalm 29:11), ‘May the Lord grant His people strength; may the Lord bless His people with shalom [peace].'”
  • The Kaddish prayer ends with peace.
