North American X-15

The North American X-15 was an experimental plane which set the all-time speed record for the fastest manned aircraft flight in October 1967. It flew at a speed of Mach 6.70 at 102,000 feet.

Only a handful of pilots flew the X-15, one of the most notable was Neil Armstrong. Several died while pushing the limits of the atmosphere and the plane.
