Newport is a market town located mainly in Shropshire, at the border with Staffordshire, with its north-easternmost development being located in that county. It is administered by Telford and Wrekin Council; Newport is part of the Telford post town, being 6 miles north-east of the town proper. Stafford is 12 miles to the east.
Nearby Edgmond is home to Harper Adams University, which was established in 1901 and specialises in higher education in the agricultural sector. Haberdashers' Adams School is located in Newport.
