Militarism is a political philosophy which sees the military as the most important part of society. Militarism advocates strong armed forces and their use in settling international disputes. Examples include Nazi Germany, pre-World War II Japan and modern North Korea.

Historian Arnold J. Toynbee argued that civilizations die from suicide, not murder, and he identified militarism as the most common and potent self-inflicted cause of collapse.
