Melinda French Gates is the former Microsoft manager who married Bill Gates. Despite supposedly a Catholic, Melinda Gates began planning her divorce from husband back in 2019, before filing for divorce in Seattle in 2021. She publicly criticized and lectured the Catholic church without disclosing her own plans to divorce her husband. Three stocks worth $5 billion were transferred to Melinda Gates as part of her divorce proceedings.
During her marriage before it dissolved, Melinda Gates became influential in the Gates Foundation around 2001 and exercised considerable control over its grant decisions between 2002 and 2006. During that period the Gates Foundation stopped giving unrestricted money to domestic abortion groups.
By July 2017, Melinda Gates announced her funding of pro-abortion groups to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, while demanding that the Catholic Church change its opposition to contraception. Gates asserted that she was not funding abortion itself, while funding groups that advocate and perform abortions.
