Lawrence Eugene Doby (December 13, 1923 – June 18, 2003), known as Larry Doby, was the second black baseball player to play in Major League Baseball, and the first to do so in the American League. He was the first to win a World Series championship, with the Cleveland Indians.
He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by its veterans' committee, in 1998.
In contrast with Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby went straight to the major leagues directly from the Negro League. He was one of only 4 players (who include Willie Mays) who played in both the Negro League and Major League Baseball.
Doby had a strong faith in God.
