Kurt W. Wallace (born July 17, 1957) is a staunchly conservative Republican former member of the Alabama House of Representatives for District 42 in northern Autauga and Chilton counties in the central portion of his state. He filled the position from 2010 to 2014, when he was unseated in his primary election by 117 votes.
Wallace received a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 2001 from Faulkner University in the capital city of Montgomery, Alabama. In 2005, he obtained his Master of Business Administration in management, also from Faulkner. From 1984 to 2009, he was the director of distribution for Bush Hog, Inc., a company based in Selma, Alabama. From 2008 to 2010, he was the mayor of his native Maplesville in Chilton County. From 1999 to 2007, he sat on the Maplesville City Council. .[1][2] He has also hosted a weekly radio program, The Flow, on the Veritas network.[3]
In 2010, Wallace handily unseated the Democrat incumbent Representative James Martin of Clanton, Alabama, 9,382 (63.2 percent) to 5,452 (36.8 percent). In 2014, after switching parties, Martin narrowly unseated Wallace in the Republican primary, 4,624 votes (50.6 percent) to 4,507 (49.4 percent). Wallace then ran without opposition in the November 4 general election.[1]
Wallace served on these House committees: (1) Commerce and Small Business, (2) Permanent Joint Transportation, (3) Shelby County Legislation Committee, and (4) Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure.[2]
In 2011, Representative Wallace voted to require photo identification for voting in Alabama and a strengthening of state immigration policies. He voted to prohibit abortions after twenty weeks of gestation of the unborn child. In 2012, he voted to require school districts to rearrange student attendance so that the summer break would be longer. He voted to prohibit insurance companies in Alabama from funding abortion. In 2013, he voted to establish health care standards for abortuaries in Alabama. In 2014, he co-sponsored the bill to prohibit abortion after the detection of the heartbeat of the unborn child. He voted to permit display of the Ten Commandments on public property, a measure which passed the House, 77-19. He supported drug testing for certain recipients of the public welfare system.[4]
In 2012, Wallace endorsed Newt Gingrich for the Republican presidential nomination won by Mitt Romney, who was then defeated by Barack H. Obama.[1]
