John Swinney (b. 1964) is a Member of the Scottish Parliament for the far-left Scottish National Party. He assumed the role of First Minister of Scotland (the head of the Scottish Government) on 8 May 2024, succeeding Humza Yousaf (2023-2024). He is generally considered less extreme left-wing than predecessors from his party, such as Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf.
