Joseph Floy Lovvorn, known as Joe Lovvorn (born September 5, 1976),[1] is a firefighter and a real estate agent from Auburn, Alabama, who has since 2016 represented District 79 in the Alabama House of Representatives. A Republican, his district is entirely within Lee County in the eastern portion of the state next to the Georgia line.
Lovvorn was reared in the rural community of Graham in Randolph County in eastern Alabama, where his family owned one of the two general stores in town. His father, Terry, was a member of the Randolph County Commission, and his mother, Sherry, taught school.[1] He recalls "small town values, understanding and the appreciation of sitting down at that kitchen table to tighten the belt on your budget to live within your means, I feel like we could apply some of that common sense to how we run our government on all levels. Live within your means, prioritize and be true to the people who are around you," Lovvorn said.[2] He graduated from Woodland High School in Woodland in Randolph County, at which he was a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership recipient. He received his undergraduate degree and his Master of Business Administration from Auburn University in Auburn. In addition to firefighting - he is a battalion chief—and Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate, he owns the franchise in Auburn of Two Men and a Truck. He is a former director of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce.[3] He and his wife, the former Jenifer Bigelow, have two sons, Jackson and Landon, in the Auburn public schools. Mrs. Lovvorn, a former teacher is also a realtor at Berkshire Hathaway.[1][4]
Lovvorn was elected to the Alabama House in a special election held on September 13, 2016, by defeating with 51 percent of the ballots cas three intra-party rivals, small business owner Sandy Toomer, real estate agent Jay Conner, and attorney Brett Smith. He succeeded Republican Representative and former House Speaker Mike Hubbard, who resigned in the wake of conviction of twelve felony ethics violations.[3][4]
Lovvorn sits on these House committees: (1) Lee County Legislation, (2) Technology and Research, and (3) Ways and Means Education.[5]
In 2017, Representative Lovvorn voted to prohibit the state from discriminating against, refusing to license, or refusing to renew the license of adoption agencies on the basis that the agency declines services because of its religious beliefs. The measure passed the House, 60-14. He voted to permit midwives to practice in his state, a measure which won House approval, 84-11. He voted to reduce the time for appeals from inmates on death row. He voted to prohibit alteration or removal of historic monuments, which passed 72-29. He voted to prohibit judicial override of sentencing guidelines, a measure which passed the House, 78-19.[6]
