Jeremy Paul Stine (born July 10, 1980) is a Republican businessman who represents District 27 in the state Senate of his native Louisiana. He is the incoming Senate Majority Leader.[1]
Stine won the special election held on November 13, 2021, for the Senate seat vacated by Moderate Republican Ronnie Johns, a staunch ally of Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, who appointed Johns as the chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board and hence created the Senate vacancy."[2] Turnout in the election was only 21 percent of registered voters.
Stine received 9,313 votes (59 percent) to Democrat Dustin Granger, who polled 6,069 votes (39 percent).[3] In 2023, Granger was the unsuccessful Democrat candidate for state treasurer, having lost in the runoff to former U.S. Representative John Fleming.
Stine is a scion of the large Stine Lumber Company which operates from Sulphur in Calcasieu Parish and DeRidder in Beauregard Parish. His uncles, Dennis Stine and Tim Stine, both served as a state representative from Calcasieu Parish. He is a son of David Paul and Anita Stine of Lake Charles.
Stine received a degree in political science and French language from Louisiana State University in the capital city of Baton Rouge. While a student, he worked as an aide for the Jefferson Parish legislative delegation and later with a United States Senator, presumably Republican David Vitter. Previously, he was an associate banker with Stephens, Inc., of Little Rock, Arkansas, where he focused on developing customized, cost-efficient financing strategies for municipalities throughout Louisiana, including the Calcasieu Parish School Board, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, Lake Charles Ward 3 Recreation, and the cities of Sulphur, Westlake, and Lake Charles. He concentrated on the management of long-term debt management, capital improvement planning, and methods of refinancing.[4]
Stine is the president of the nonprofit organization, the Alliance for Positive Growth (APG) in which capacity he seeks to assist business leaders and citizens in expanding their companies. The alliance shed light on the lack of immediate relief to the Southwest region following both Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Their efforts rallied the community to urge passage of a national disaster relief funding plan.[4]
Stine and his wife, Emily, have three young children, two sons and a daughter. The family is Roman Catholic and worships at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles.[4]
Though pro-life, it is unclear if Stine is a conservative or a Moderate Republican.
