James III (July 1451/May 1452 – 11 June 1488) was King of Scotland from August 3, 1460 until June 11, 1488, during his reign he was unpopular with many people and in June 1488 was replaced with his son James IV after the battle of royalists against the rebels at the Battle of Sauchieburn in which he was killed.

Life

He was born in either July 1451 (most likely July 10/20) or May 1452, he was the son of James II of Scotland and his spouse Mary of Guelders, he became king at the age of 8 or 9 after his father died by an exploding cannon during the Siege of Roxburgh Castle. His regents were

  • Mary of Guelders (1460–1463)
  • James Kennedy (1463–1466)
  • Robert, Lord Boyd (1466–1469)

Reign

During his reign he was weak and confronted with multiple rebellions, ultimately leading to his death at the battle of Sauchieburn in June 1488.
