Indira Talwani
Indira Talwani (b. Oct.6, 1960) is a liberal United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
In September 2013, Obama nominated Talwani to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, to the seat vacated by Judge Mark L. Wolf, who assumed senior status on January 1, 2013.[1] On February 6, 2014, her nomination was reported out of committee.[2] Cloture was filed on her nomination on May 6, 2014.[3] On May 8, 2014, the Senate invoked cloture on her nomination by a 55–41 vote.[4] Later that day, her nomination was confirmed by a 94–0 vote.[5]
In 2023, Talwani rules MA student's 'there are only two genders' T-shirt ‘invades the rights of others,’ is NOT protected by free speech.[6]
Already in 2019, this liberal judge, blocked ICE from arresting in courthouse.[7]
In March 2025, as ICE arrested Islamic Tufts U student Rumeysa Ozturk from Turkey on a visa[8]:
In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said agents detained Ozturk because she “engaged in activities in support of Hamas.”
“Rumeysa Ozturk is a Turkish national and Tufts University graduate student who was granted the privilege to be in this country on a visa. DHS and ICE investigations found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans,” the statement read. “A visa is a privilege, not a right. Glorifying and supporting terrorists who kill Americans is grounds for visa issuance to be terminated. This is commonsense security.”
However, Ozturk was already “detained outside Massachusetts” when the petition and order were issued.
