Hugh Maxwell Wallis, Sr. (November 12, 1836 – December 23, 1903)[1] was a physician, newspaper publisher, and politician from Houma in Terrebonne Parish in south Louisiana, fifty-seven miles west of New Orleans.
Wallis was born in Kent County, Maryland, the son of Hugh Wallis and the former Hannah Brooks Wright. He was educated at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1860. That same year, he married the former Mary "Mollie" Howard Hyland (1840-1908), a native of Natchez in Adams County in western Mississippi, and a daughter of Dr. Isaac Mitchell Price and the former Louise C. Howard. The couple had twelve children, one of whom died at the age of one year. [2]Another son, Hugh Wallis, Jr. (1863-1941), was a Houma attorney, two-term mayor, and district judge.[3]
Dr. Wallis located his practice in Houma in 1861. A Republican, he was from 1878 to 1882 a post-Reconstruction mayor of Houma. He founded and published The Terrebonne Times, a Republican-oriented journal,[2] which was continued by a son, Morley Howard Wallis (1860-1940).[4]
An Episcopalian, Dr. Wallis died in Covington in St. Tammany Parish at the age of sixty-seven and is interred with other family members at Magnolia Cemetery in Houma.[2]
