Homework Two Answers - Student Fourteen

Here are my answers to this assignment.

2. What do you think were the two biggest causes of the Revolutionary War, and why?

I believe one of the major causes of the Revolutionary War was taxes, because colonists were taxed by Parliament without representation. Another was the fact that the colonists enjoyed self-government before the French and Indian War, and the British intruded on their lives.

3. Look at the map of the American colonies in the lecture. Which northeastern state was not one of the original 13 colonies, and what significant event happened there?

In Ohio, the French and British came into conflict over fur trade with the Native Americans.

But Ohio is not a "northeastern state." Ohio is considered part of the Midwest. Moreover, fur trade is not exactly a "significant event." Please see the model answers when finished later today. (Minus 2).

4. The "Tea Party" today takes its name from which event? Explain how that event connects to the views of the Tea Party Movement today.

The Tea Party today took its name from the Boston Tea Party, for many of the same reasons. The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the Tea Tax, and today's Tea Party is over a big government taking away rights from citizens and taxing them with little representation and passing laws (i.e. ObamaCare) that many citizens do not care for.

Good, but not precisely correct about the cause of the Boston Tea Party. I think government favoritism for the British goods was a factor too. (Minus 1).

5. Explain and discuss the Great Awakening, and its effect in uniting the colonies.

The Great Awakening was a return to Christianity by colonists and it brought them closer together in beliefs and practices and eventually inspired the American colonies to revolution.

Good, but mention the time period (1730s and 1740s). (Minus 1).

6. What was the significance—and the outcome—of the French and Indian War? Should it have a different name?

The French and Indian War was a war between Britain and France in America over trade and the significance it has is the fact that it forced France to give Britain their American settlements. It should have a different name because the French sided with many Native Americans and a few sided with the British. Perhaps it could simply be renamed the French and British War.

7. Describe several of the laws passed by Britain during the time period leading up to the Revolutionary War, and their effect on the colonies.

The Proclamation Act forbade colonists to settle west of Appalachians and forced them to stop buying land from Native Americans. It affected farming, as colonists were confined to the land they had, and could not explore. Also, the various taxes, like the Stamp Act and the Tea Tax stirred up colonists' anger with Britain.
