1. Pick a question that you missed on the midterm exam, and describe several different ways that you could have figured out the correct answer instead.

The most important thing I should have done was double check my answers. As well stick with my first impression. Failing question six could have been easily prevented if i had done this. My first impression was that the compromise of 1877 ended the reconstruction (the correct answer). Unfortunately I began to give it to much thought to the word compromise which lead me to switch my answer to D (that the Compromise of 1877-Elected the first Democrat president after the civil war.) Altogether if I had spent more time studying I would not have been unsure of my first answer.

3. Please explain your views of the Scopes Trial.

I see it as a clear example and reminder of how important it is to have steadfast faith and understanding of the Bible. Bryan’s biggest mistake was suggesting that God created the world through an evolutionary process taking millions of years, instead of the six twenty-four hour days stated through scripture. I definitely agree that John Scope was guilty under the Butler Act. It is unfortunate the case was later overturned.

4. Who was the most influential person of the time period in this lecture? Explain.

Henry Ford was undoubtedly the most influential person during this time period. His unique intellect and ability changed American lifestyle, motivated tyrants, and set the foundation for the modern era. Ford revolutionized welfare capitalism by giving employee’s generous wages with short work hours. This style of manufacturing encouraged the workers to become customers. German dictator Adolf Hitler also praised Henry Ford by stating, "I shall do my best to put his theories into practice in Germany." Ford later received the Grand Cross of the German Eagle award from Germany. After being encouraged by Woodrow Wilson, Henry ran for senate and promoted the League of Nations. Ford's shadow was cast upon the racing world and airplanes as well. The Ford Company became the first international car company, spreading to numerous different countries and he also received over 150 U.S. patents.

Ford was a highly successful manufacturer, as you describe. I didn't know that Hitler later copied Ford's work.

5. Pick any debate or discussion topic or issue in this lecture, and answer it.

Was it discriminatory not to include girls and women in this draft?

Yes it was. However it was more of a strategic discrimination. The women were able to keep factories running within America and were able to become nurses thus aiding wounded soldiers.

6. Briefly explain Constitutional Amendments 16 through 19.

16th Amendment: Allows government to directly tax a citizen’s income.

17th Amendment: Amended Article 1 Section 3 of the constitution, allowing the American people to directly elect senators.

18th Amendment: Prohibited the manufacturing, sale, transportation and consumption of any intoxicating liquor within the United States. (Only amendment to be repealed)

19th Amendment: Gave women the undeniable right to vote.

Correct, and you describe the 19th Amendment particularly well.

H1. Discuss your view of the free speech decisions during World War I.

The original Espionage act of 1917 was an important legislation because it tactically expanded the governments jurisdiction. Creating a foundation on which supposed spies and saboteurs could be investigated. However the following Sedition Act undoubtedly proved to be an attack on American free speech. Which should not be limited or censored for any reason, during any circumstance.

H4. What is your opinion of Lochner doctrine?

I disagree with the Lochner Doctrine. The employer should have private contract rights. Allowing him to employ whoever willingly agrees to the contract.

That means you support Lochner doctrine. It protected the rights of employers and workers to set their own terms of employment. Later the court began allowing government to regulate employment. (Minus 1).

H5. Do you think the ideas of Darwinism—survival of the fittest—made World War I so horrific?

Absolutely, Social Darwinism explains such conflict as natural. It was the justification countries used to justify their quest for greater power and authority. The idea that there is no ultimate authority and everything was created through chaos is insane.
