High Speed 2 is a high-speed railway in the United Kingdom that has been under construction since 2019. It is the second high-speed rail line in the UK, after HS1 which connects Greater London to the Channel Tunnel. The line is planned to link London Euston station in Middlesex to Handsacre, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire.
HS2 has been the subject of intense criticism. Several Phases of the project, including Phase 2a of the project, intended to link the Staffordshire terminus with Crewe (a railway hub in Cheshire), plus the Phase 2b link to Manchester which would have been linked to the non-high-speed West Coast Mainline via the Golborne Link, were cancelled at a cost of £100 billion in 2023.[1]
