Gilbertines, founded by St. Gilbert (1083-1189) at Sempringham, England, is the only monastic order that was purely English. It began as a monastery of women, but expanded to include monasteries of men also, all of whom obeyed the Rule of St. Augustine.

A "Prior of All" held absolute authority over the monks.

This monastic order thrived until King Henry VIII dissolved it and its 25 monasteries. Robert Holgate was its last master.
