George Read (September 18, 1733 – September 21, 1798) was a lawyer and politician from Delaware, President of the state of Delaware, and a Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. He was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.[1]
Early life
Read was born near North East, in Cecil County, Maryland, on September 18, 1733. As a young man, Read attended preparatory school in New London, Pennsylvania and then studied law in Philadelphia. He was admitted to the bar and began practice in New Castle, Delaware, in 1752.
