Francesco Schettino was the captain of the Costa Concordia, a cruise ship carrying over 4,000 people, which hit a rock and capsized off the west Coast of Italy. Early reports indicated that Schettino departed from the course programmed into the ship's GPS-controlled navigation system to make a deliberate close approach to shore. During the evacuation, Schettino got into one of the lifeboats; he says he fell in.
In two conversations with Italian coast guard, he was ordered to return to the ship and provide information on how many people remained on board. He made various excuses and refused,[1]
