Fischer v. Petrosian, Game 7 (1971) was a positional masterpiece by Bobby Fischer in crushing the former world championship Tigran Petrosian and taking control of their match, and thereby win the Candidates' Tournament to earn the right to face Boris Spassky for the world championship.[1]

This game is notable for several stunning moves by Fischer, such as Nxd7! and declining to trade queens when most computer programs would recommend such an exchange. Fischer's passed pawn on the queen side placed Petrosian in a hole which he could never climb out of, and Petrosian ultimately resigned.

With the white pieces, Fischer played for position, attaining an advantage with two connected pawns and successfully isolating Petrosian's pawns.

This game is analyzed on YouTube.[2]
