Human eyelashes
A horse's eyelashes

An eyelash is a fringe of special hairs on the edge of the eyelid in many mammals. Eyelashes typically grow on both the top and bottom eyelids. Their main purpose is to protect the eye from small particles of dust and other debris. They are also very sensitive to touch, and signal when an object might be too close to the eye (which tends to cause the eyelid to close protectively).[1]
