Several historical figures have reported that certain great ideas came to them in dreams or visions. In science, mathematics, and engineering, such figures include:
- Isaac Singer: idea for the sewing machine came from a vision of cannibals running with their spears going up and down
- August Kekulé: discovered the structure of the benzene from a vision or dream of children playing in a circle and holding hands (see double bond in organic chemistry).
- Ramanujan claimed that most of his ideas came to him in dreams.[1]
