End college tenure

End college tenure is a conservative movement to end lifetime employment -- regardless of performance -- by professors at publicly funded colleges.

As explained on May 11, 2023 by FiveThirtyEight:

Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that originally set out to completely eliminate tenure at public colleges and universities. In Ohio, lawmakers are weighing legislation that would mandate tenure reviews for professors. This year, at least three more states — North Dakota, Louisiana and Iowa — considered [without passing] similar measures ....

”

Florida SB 266 (2013)

In 2013, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law Florida SB 266, which

“

restricts certain topics from being taught in general education courses, the lower-level classes that all students must take for their degrees. It also expands the hiring and firing powers of university boards and presidents, limits protections for tenured faculty members and prohibits spending related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs beyond what is required by accreditors.

”

Texas SB 18 (2023)

In spring 2023, Texas Senate Bill 18 passed mostly on a party line vote, 18-11, but with one Dem crossing over to the GOP side and two Republicans absent:

“

18-11, largely along party lines, with Sens. Brian Birdwell and Kevin Sparks absent. Notably, Sen. César Blanco, D-El Paso, broke from his party to join Republicans in supporting the measure, arguing that tenure is a historical and discriminatory barrier for professors of color and pointing to racial disparities among faculty awarded tenure at Texas universities.

”

But in May 2023 the RINO Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan stalled the bill, which by May 16 remained stuck in a committee. The biennial session of the Texas legislature adjourns by law on May 29, 2023.
