Educational essentialism is the school of thought in education that students should learn a core set of facts in specific basic subjects, and that these should be explored rigorously. Educational essentialists generally do not support the introduction of students' personal experience into lessons, and tend to favor lecture formats as compared to Progressivists such as John Dewey, whose educational philosophy was much opposite that of educational essentialism.
