DeWitt, Michigan is a city located in Clinton County, in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 4,776. DeWitt is part of the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area and is known for its small-town charm, strong sense of community, and proximity to Michigan's state capital, Lansing.
History
DeWitt was first settled in 1833 by Captain David Scott, who established a sawmill along the Looking Glass River. The settlement grew quickly due to its location on a key transportation route and its access to timber resources. In 1836, the area was officially platted and named DeWitt in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the former governor of New York and an advocate of the Erie Canal.
In 1929, much of DeWitt's downtown area was destroyed in a fire. The community rebuilt over the following decades, maintaining its role as a residential and agricultural hub. DeWitt officially became a city in 1965, separating from the surrounding DeWitt Township.
Geography
DeWitt is located in south-central Clinton County and lies approximately 10 miles north of Lansing. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.99 square miles, of which 2.92 square miles is land and 0.07 square miles is water.
