David Ignatius is a reporter for the Washington Post. He has been referred to as "the CIA's apologist-in-chief".[1] His call sign is 'Deep State Mouthpiece'.[2]

Collapse of the Soviet Union

Shortly after the August 1991 anti-communist coup in Russia, Ignatius penned an article in the Washington Post exalting the role of western “pro-democracy” operatives in bringing down the Soviet regime. Gushing over “the great democratic revolution that has swept the globe, ” Ignatius made a surprising revelation about the makings of this revolution: "Preparing the ground for last month’s triumph of overt action was a network of overt operatives who during the last 10 years have quietly been changing the rules of international politics. They have been doing in public what the CIA used to do in private – providing money and moral support for pro-democracy groups, training resistance fighters, working to subvert communist rule.”

Ignatius singled out the work of the pro-democracy activist Allen Weinstein who began to organize Soviet dissidents already in 1980. Ignatius also credits William Miller of the American Committee on U.S.-Soviet Relations, George Soros of the Open Society Foundation, John Mroz of the Center for East-West Security Studies, John Baker of the Atlantic Council and Harriett Crosby of the Institute for Soviet-American Relations. National Endowment for Democracy (NED) headed by Zbigniew Brzezinski was the “sugar daddy of overt operations.” It had been active inside the Soviet Union for years – overtly, of course – financing various Soviet trade unions and the liberal “Interregional Group” in the Congress of People’s Deputies.[3]

In early January 2017 former NSA official John Schindler tweeted, "When @IgnatiusPost speaks, Langley's 7th floor lips are moving."[4] "Langley's 7th floor" is a reference to CIA headquarters.

In early February 2017 Ignatius came under FBI investigation in relation to leaks of classified information that led to the resignation of Gen. Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's first appointment as National Security Advisor.[5] Steven Schrage suggests Stefan Halper may be the source of the leak to Ignatius of the Michael Flynn/Sergei Kislyak phone call.[6]

In 2012 Ambassador Christopher Stevens was put in charge of a covert operation to locate and buy back unaccounted MANPADS at the time of the Benghazi massacre. That was his mission there. While efforts by US-backed rebels to oust US War on Terror ally,[7] Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, more than 20,000 Soviet-era MANPADS fell into the hands of radical Islamic terrorist groups and remain unaccounted for, according to Ignatius.[8]

NATO war in Ukraine

At the start of Ukraine's failed counteroffensive Ignatius wrote on June 6, 2023, “This assault could turn the tide of the battle for Ukraine, just as the Allied assault on the Normandy beaches altered the trajectory of World War II”.[9] The Armed Forces of Ukraine lost over 70,000 troops and gained absolutely no territory back. NATO equipment and tactics proved faulty and disastrous, being soundly defeated in the field.[10]

In July 2023 Ignatius wrote, "these 18 months of war have been a strategic windfall, at relatively low cost (other than for the Ukrainians). The West’s most reckless antagonist has been rocked. NATO has grown much stronger with the additions of Sweden and Finland. Germany has weaned itself from dependence on Russian energy and, in many ways, rediscovered its sense of values. NATO squabbles make headlines, but overall, this has been a triumphal summer for the alliance.”[11]

On September 12, 2023 Ignatius opined in an Washington Post op-ed that President Biden Should Not Run Again In 2024.[12]

On October 5, 2023 Ignatius reported: "The conflict is bleeding the country out. Ukrainians I spoke with during a four-day visit know they can’t keep fighting forever seeking what might be an unachievable victory....Oleksiy Goncharenko, an opposition member from embattled Odessa on the Black Sea, presses members of the ruling party of President Volodymyr Zelensky. “I am very concerned,” he says. “Why? Take a look at the front. It doesn’t change. For a year it doesn’t change. But it was paid for by a huge amount of lives. … Ukraine can’t fight ‘as long as it takes.’ That will be a catastrophe.”[13]
