Dating Bible manuscripts is typically done by:

  • paleography (the study of handwriting styles) which compares the script to known examples
  • use of specific contractions ("nomina sacra")
  • type of manuscript papyris

Carbon-14 dating, which was discovered in 1947, provides imprecise results and requires destruction of too much of a manuscript to be used. Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), which is an improvement on carbon-14 dating by destroying on a much smaller portion of a manuscript, has been used on fourteen of the scrolls in the Dead Sea Scrolls.[1] "In all but one instance, they confirmed the date that had been given to them by paleographers."[2]
