Dál Riata was a 5th-9th century Gaelic kingdom and a precursor to the Kingdom of Scotland. It covered what is now Argyllshire in western Scotland and north-eastern Ulster in Ireland. The kingdom merged with that of the Picts in c. 843 AD to form the Kingdom of Alba (or Scotland).
