Would it be worth noting that if an unusually large number of editors appear to be using one IP, you can type the IP in to Wikipedia or WHOIS, where they may be labelled as proxies (used by multiple people in, say, an organization)? --Hojimachongtalk 21:21, 17 May 2007 (EDT)

They label the proxies as proxies, and all IP talk pages have automatically-generated 3rd-party DNS links to WHOIS. --Hojimachongtalk 19:34, 18 May 2007 (EDT)
  • I am just missing what that has to do with us? Were you suggesting adding something like that here? A couple of other Syops asked me what you meant, so at least I feel better not being alone, lol. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 03:47, 19 May 2007 (EDT)
I mean that if you use checkuser and notice that 50 users are editing from it, then it probably isn't all the same person (if the accounts aren't all vandals). Therefore, blocking everybody who used this proxy would not be the best of ideas. And if it did happen, investigation to get them unblocked should be undertaken. --Hojimachongtalk 20:04, 19 May 2007 (EDT)

Hey where is the check user button? Can't seem to find it.--Will N. 10:54, 24 May 2007 (EDT)

I don't think that sysops have the checkuser ability. I could be wrong but I think that only philip and Mr. Schlafly have it. --Ben Talk 11:01, 24 May 2007 (EDT)

Wow ok then. --Will N. 11:25, 24 May 2007 (EDT)

I believe that if you click on "special pages" in the "tool box" on the left of your screen and go to the bottom there you will find "Check User"Bohdan Talk 11:32, 24 May 2007 (EDT)
Special:Checkuser, and yes, sysops have CU ability. --Hojimachongtalk 21:33, 24 May 2007 (EDT)

Updated

I updated the page to reflect Andy's policies about removing user and talk pages upon infinite blocks. This was really too important to have been left out. Also added a bit on how to check for vandals and socks. Andy has also stated it is important that additional Sysops provide email and IM capability to stay in close communication. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 07:29, 30 May 2007 (EDT)

  • Thanks, Philip for cleaning those links! One of the few times I actually made a note to get back to it, and here you were observant enough to do it! --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 02:57, 2 June 2007 (EDT)

Images

It strikes me that the Images section is rather redundant as only those with special rights can upload or delete them. CAHERINE 00:02, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Not sure what you mean; it looks like a reminder to lock images once their uploaded to as to avoid vandalism. Rob Smith 23:30, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Note...

I think it should be noted that sysop's are still beholden to the same rules as editors on civility etc and their powers should not be used to quash descent or hide comments. MaxFletcher 00:03, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Thanks. Done. Rob Smith 23:27, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Wheel warring

You might want to explain what this is - some old fogeys like me might not know. I think I figured it out by seeing it in the last few days, but... --SharonW 21:20, 3 August 2011 (EDT)

Images

In the "Images" section, it states that admins should check RC for image uploads, and protect recent uploads to prevent vandalism. However, I remember a discussion including myself, Conservative, and Andy (and possibly others, I don't remember) Regarding the protection of images. Since only users with the "upload" privilege can replace images anyway, it seems pointless to protect images. If anyone engages in image vandalism, it is likely that they should lose their upload rights anyway. However, while they have these rights, they could just as easily upload a new image and use that abusively.
I could not seem to find this full discussion, although I remember that it began here. I think we might have continued it in email. If I remember the decision correctly, should this section be updated? --David B (TALK) 18:29, 12 December 2018 (EST)
