Compound fraction

A compound fraction, also called a complex fraction (although it has no relation to complex numbers), is a fraction whose numerator and/or denominator is not a whole number. One example of a compound fraction is ${\frac {\tfrac {8}{9}}{\tfrac {6}{7}}}.$ They can be simplified by multipling the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. Example: ${\frac {\tfrac {7}{5}}{\tfrac {4}{5}}}$ can be simplified by: ${\tfrac {7}{5}}\times {\tfrac {5}{4}}={\tfrac {7}{4}}.$
