City of York Council

City of York Council is the unitary authority that covers the parts of the traditional county Yorkshire that form the administrative county City of York. The council consists of the city of York itself, plus some rural and suburban areas within the East, North and West Ridings of Yorkshire; all three of the county's Ridings meet at the city walls of York, with the area within the walls being the only part of Yorkshire not within any Riding. It was established in April 1996, having been formed from a non-metropolitan district within the council area of North Yorkshire County Council (which was abolished in 2023).
