Causey Arch

The Causey Arch, located in County Durham north of Stanley, is the oldest survibving single-span railway bridge in the world. It was built 1725-26 to carry a wagonway (early railway built to carry coal wagons) across the steep-sided valley of the Causey Burn (Causey: 'causeway' referring to an earlier railway embankment; burn: 'stream').
