BNSF Railway
BNSF Railway (formerly known as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway) (AAR reporting mark BNSF) was formed in 1996 in a merger between the Burlington Northern Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe. The Burlington Northern, in turn, was the product of an earlier 1970 merger among the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroads.
The BNSF is one of six Class I freight railroads in the United States and Canada, along with CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City. It is (along with Union Pacific) one of the two dominant railroads in the Western United States.
It is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. It is owned by Warren Buffett as part of his Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate.
