Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ was adapted to the stage for theatrical purposes in 1899, to mixed reviews by critics but spectacular popularity with the public. The evangelical William Jennings Bryan was among its enthusiastic supporters, and he observed that this brought a churchgoing public skeptical of theater to attend Broadway and elsewhere for the first time.
