Belgium is famous for its beer, there are brewed over thousand different kinds of beer in the country. The biggest brewery in the world, AB Inbev has its headquarters in the city of Leuven.

Trapist and Abbey beers

In early times brewing beer had a strong religious character in Belgium, almost every abbey had its own beer.

• Trappist: This kind of beer is still brewed by monks in their abbey. Worldwide there are still eleven trappist breweries, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, and one in the United States, Austria and Italy.
• Abbey beers: This kind of beers originate from an abbey but is no longer brewed by monks in their abbey, mostly the receip is sold to an industrial brewery wich took over the brewing process.
