Ban Zhao (zh. 班昭) (45─117) was a Chinese aristocrat, historian, and philosopher of the Han dynasty era who is most notable for her etiquette writing, Lessons for Women, in which she discusses the 4 virtues a woman should exhibit: virtue, speech, countenance, and conduct.
Ban is notable for her advocacy for the proper education of women, which she argued was important in helping maintain a balance of relationship and harmony in the household.
