An amniotic egg is an egg which has a shell and can hold water. The eggs can be, (given the animal and species), "hard" (rigid) or "soft" a tough (leathery) shell. While watertight, most shells are gas permeable. The shell allows reptile, bird, and some mammal embryos to develop.
