History

Alpena County was established in 1840 and originally named "An-a-ma-kee," meaning "thunder" in the Ojibwa language. The name was later changed to Alpena, a neologism created by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who combined Native American-sounding syllables. The area was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa people and became an important center for lumbering and maritime commerce in the 19th century.

Geography
