Abadan, in Persian آبادان, is a major port city in Iran on an island in the Shatt River near the Persian Gulf with a population of 370,180.[1]

History

Abadan was founded in the 700s as a prosperous coastal town in the Abbasid period, though in the following 700 years the gulf receded and the town grew poor.[2] Ibn Baṭṭūṭah described it as a large village in a salty plain.[3]

While under Persian and Ottoman dispute, the Persians claimed it in 1847. In 1909, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (later National Iranian Oil Company) constructed a pipeline refinery there.[3]

In the early 1980s, the Siege of Abadan took place, mountain tensions in the Iran-Iraqi War,[4] though the town is trying to improve its reputation.[5]
