The 4th Bersaglieri Regiment form part of the Bersaglieri Corps of the Italian Army, originally created by General Alessandro La Marmora on 18 June 1836.

They compiled an excellent combat record, and can still be recognized by the distinctive helmets, decorated with black plumes.

The regiment deployed on western alps with Raggruppamento Celere, 4th Army on 10 June 1940. The regiment fought in the Greco-Italian War from November 1940 to March 1941 and against the 3rd Yugoslavian Army in April 1941.

The regiment carried out occupation duties in Dalmatia from May 1941 to August 1943. With the Italian Armistice a large part of the unit (including command, battle flag and the entire 24th Battalion) returns to Italy, avoiding destruction and capture at the hands of German forces.

Reorganized with the 24th and 33rd Battalions, the regiment is deployed on the Italian front in the late winter of 1943-44 as part of the 1st Motorized Group and fights at Monte Marrone. With the reorganization of Royal Army, the regiment becomes part of I CIL Brigade, seeing action in in the spring and summer of 1944 in Abruzzi and Marche. The regiment is disbanded along with the CIL in October 1944.
